According to Lakhwinder Singh, he gave up farming in his village and moved to Mohali to give his son a better chance of succeeding as a professional cricketer.

On February 25, 2017, he created a List A spot for the Punjab squad to compete in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy as an alternative to the Vidharbha team. On November 17, 2017, Shubham secured a position in the first-class competition for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy 2017–18 season. In his second encounter of the first class the following month, he hit his first century while batting for Punjab against Services. This match took place in the same month. Against the Bengal team, he scored 129 points. At the 2018 Indian Premier League auction in January of 2018, he was purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the price of INR 1.8 crore. On April 14, 2018, he signed up for the T20 competition with Kolkata Knight Riders, part of the 2018 IPL.

Shubman Gill International Career

In February 2017, he was a member of the Indian U-19 team that defeated the England U-19 side in a series. Next, in December 2017, he was given the role of vice-captain of India’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup side. This tournament will take place in 2018.
